da leao: Leeds United signing Maximilian Wober will likely be signed to cover both areas at centre-back and left-back.

The Lowdown: Wober makes the move to West Yorkshire

da mrbet: The Austrian defender became the Whites’ first signing of the January window for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal from RB Salzburg, and manager Jesse Marsch knows the player well from when he managed the club.

Wober is a centre-back but can also operate at left-back. In addition, he’s won three Austrian Bundesliga titles and three Austrian cups in his career so far.

The Latest: Leeds not signing any more left-backs

Following Wober’s arrival, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Leeds won’t sign another left-back as Wober covers both roles. Furthermore, he understands the news may be ‘not what fans want to hear’, but they’ll have to ‘trust the process’.

He said: “Well, it is looking like Wober is the one to cover left-back so that he covers two roles.

“That’s probably not what the fans want to hear. They might’ve wanted a clearer idea of a left-back. Obviously, Kai Wagner had been looked at, but Marsch knows enough about Wober to know his strengths.

“They think that this is a smart move, so you kind of have to trust the process.”

The Verdict: Leeds may need to consider conventional left-back

When you look at the Whites’ squad, they’re not blessed with many natural left-backs. The main one that comes to mind is Junior Firpo, who’s only made two league appearances and one league start in the 2022/23 campaign so far amid his injury issues.

Kai Wagner is one player who had been linked with a move to Elland Road. The German has played 128 times for Philadelphia Union, spending the majority of his career as a left-back.

Considering how scarce they are in that position, it’s worrying to imagine that the higher-ups at Leeds think they have what they need in the left-back area. It seems to be a glaring hole in the squad that perhaps needs filling with a more orthodox option.
